Hotel de Los Charcones – Lanzarote

Situated north-west of Playa Blanca you will find the the skeletal remains of a hotel called ‘Atlante del Sol’, which is otherwise known as ‘Hotel de Los Charcones’ due to is location. This looming building although fenced off, is an easy site to visit.

There are a number of stories behind why this large hotel is abandoned and deteriorating.

One of the most famous stories doing the rounds, is that the hotel was built by a German investor in the late 60s or early 70s. The intention was to build a ‘Golf Hotel’, but all attempts to irrigate grass on the volcanic clay based soil failed. Leaving the building which has not road to it abandoned.

Other stories claim that the hotel was built without any of the correct permits required and was subsequently abandoned when these permits were not granted.

Currently this derelict structure provides ‘free’ lodging to backpackers and drug addicts. Who have a magnificent view with peace and quiet found nowhere else on the island.
